Building a UK credit file from scratch, month by month
New to the UK with no credit history? The steps that actually add to your file, how long they take to show, and what to avoid while it builds.

A UK credit file is built from things lenders can see: where you live, what you owe, and whether you pay on time. When you arrive from abroad it is empty, and an empty file gets declined for things that seem trivial, like a phone contract or a free bank account.
None of this is fast, but most of it is free, and the sooner you start the sooner it counts.
1. Get on the electoral roll, this week
Being registered to vote is one of the main ways lenders confirm you live where you say you do, and it can give your file a boost.
You do not have to be British. Australians and other Commonwealth citizens who have permission to be in the UK can register, online, in about five minutes.
2. Put something in your name
·
A bill at your address, such as energy or broadband, if your tenancy allows it.
·
A pay monthly phone contract. These are usually credit checked and show up on your file once you have one.
·
Keep the same address on everything, and update every account the day you move.
3. Get credit for your rent
Rent is most people’s biggest bill and it does not normally count. Services like CreditLadder can report your rent payments to the credit reference agencies by checking them in your bank account.
It is slow: rent usually needs six months of payment history before it appears in your Experian score. That is exactly why to set it up early.
4. A small credit card, paid off in full
A credit builder card, or a card from your own bank’s app, with a small limit you actually use and clear in full every month, is the clearest signal you can send.
If you held an American Express card in Australia, ask Amex about its global transfer first. It lets Amex UK use your Australian Amex history when you apply.
Use a little credit and pay it off in full every month. That is most of the job.
What to avoid while it builds
·
Lots of applications close together. Each hard search is visible, and several in a short time looks like trouble.
·
Missing a payment, even a small one. On a thin file one late payment stands out.
·
Moving money in and out through payday loans or buy now pay later to "build history". It rarely helps and can hurt.
Check it for free
Each of the three credit reference agencies lets you see your file for free, directly or through apps like ClearScore and Credit Karma. Check that your address is right and that the things you have set up are appearing.
Once there are a few months of on-time payments on it, the switch bonus accounts get much easier to open.
Six tap-only questions and Bank Switcher tells you which of these offers you can actually take, in the order that collects the most. Free, and about a minute.
