Doing UK bank switch bonuses on a Youth Mobility visa
Two or three years in London is enough time to collect most of the UK switch bonuses, if you pace it. How to fit the cycle around a visa, a thin credit file and a flight home.

Australians on the Youth Mobility Scheme get up to two years in the UK, and can extend by a third. That is plenty of time to collect most of the bank switch bonuses on offer, but only if you do not waste the first few months, and do not leave the last one too late.
How long one switch takes
A switch itself takes seven working days. The wait is everything after it: most banks give you 30 to 60 days to meet their conditions, like paying in money or making card payments, and then take up to another month or two to pay.
Nationwide is one of the quickest, paying within about 10 days of you meeting its conditions. Santander and NatWest can take a few months from start to money in the account. Doing them one after another, five offers is roughly a year.
Months 1 to 3: set up, do not apply yet
The bonus accounts usually run a credit check, and a brand-new file gets declined. Giving it a few months first is faster overall than collecting declines in your first weeks.
·
Open an app bank account (Monzo, Starling or Revolut) for your wages.
·
Get on the electoral roll and put a bill or phone contract in your name.
·
Open a second app account as your spare. This is the one you will switch away, so your salary account never moves.
Months 3 to 18: the main run
Work through the offers you are eligible for, one or two at a time. Start with the ones with the simplest conditions and fastest payouts, and leave the banks that want large pay-ins until you have the cash sitting still.
New offers appear and old ones end, so check what is live each time a bonus lands rather than planning the whole two years on day one.
The first three months are for building a credit file. The bonuses are faster once you have one.
The last few months
Payouts lag. Do not start a switch whose conditions and payment window run past the date you fly home, because a bonus paid into an account you have stopped using is easy to lose track of.
If you extend to a third year, you may find offers you took early have come back, but most banks only pay once per person, ever. Check each bank’s "have you had a bonus from us before" rule rather than assuming.
What we do about it
Bank Switcher asks which banks you hold and which bonuses you have had, then puts the offers you can take in the order that collects the most, with an estimated date for each payout. That makes it easy to see what fits before your visa ends.
